Position Description

Entry Salary - $15.00/hour

Traffic safety work of ordinary difficulty and responsibility in directing traffic at designated spots where school children cross streets.

Employees in this classification work under the general supervision of a Police Supervisor in the Operations Division. Work is routine but requires alertness and presence of mind in hazardous traffic situations.


Hours of Position for school year 2021/2022:

Elementary School: Monday - Friday 7:45 a.m. - 8:45 a.m. AND 2:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Middle School: Monday - Friday 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. AND 3:45 p.m. - 4:45 p.m.
Duties and Responsibilities

  • Directs, monitors, and regulates flow of traffic during school hours; supervises and oversees the crossing of streets during the hours when children are going to and returning from school.
  • Ensures the safety of children who must cross hazardous streets; uses stop sign equipment and directs the crossing of streets during heavily trafficked hours.
  • Sets out warning and traffic control signs in designated school zone areas; places signs and equipment appropriately and safely.
  • Assists and supports in school safety programs, such as bicycle inspections.
  • May be assigned special duties during parades and other special events.
  • Attends and participates in various meetings to ensure all activities are done effectively and in accordance with policies, procedures, and ordinances.
  • Dependability in attendance for outdoor work regardless of weather conditions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment:
A valid State driver's license is required.

Employees selected for this position must meet FDLE guidelines in order to access sensitive and/or confidential information. Applicants with arrest histories for felonies or serious misdemeanors may be denied access to this information and as such, will not meet the minimum qualifications for a position with the City of Clearwater.

Education and Experience:
Must have minimum Tenth Grade Education; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
